Literacy
At New Mills School, we believe that literacy is the foundation for lifelong learning and opportunity. Our guiding motto is that we read to be empowered. We recognise that reading and writing are inter-connected. The better we read, the better we write.
We are committed to supporting all students in becoming confident, independent readers and writers through a carefully sequenced and ambitious curriculum. Reading and writing are scaffolded at every stage and subject, with support and guidance gradually removed as students build the skills and confidence to work independently.
Reading for Progress and Pleasure
To monitor and support students’ progress in reading, we use the NGRT (New Group Reading Test) across the school. This provides valuable insights into reading comprehension and helps us tailor support where it’s most needed.
At Key Stage 3, students benefit from targeted independent reading through Sparx Reader—a platform that personalises reading pathways and encourages consistent reading habits. In addition, all Key Stage 3 students visit the library fortnightly during English lessons, where they explore a wide range of literature, engage in shared reading, and continue their independent reading using Sparx.
We also make the most of form time reading, where students engage with thought-provoking articles on current issues and world events, encouraging critical thinking and discussion beyond the classroom using The Day – a daily news platform with articles written specifically for secondary aged students.
Writing with Purpose and Creativity
Our writing curriculum mirrors our approach to reading, with high-quality scaffolding and gradual release of support. We methodically map the components of writing for each discipline over Key Stage 3 and 4 so that our students can write like specialists in all the subjects that they study.
We also nurture students’ creativity and love of writing through opportunities such as the Young Writers competitions, where many of our students have celebrated success in having their work published.
Intervention and Support
For students who need additional support, we offer a comprehensive intervention programme, including:
-
Lexonik Phonics – a structured approach to phonics for students who need to revisit core skills.
-
Reading Box – targeted reading comprehension practice for developing readers.
-
H4L Fluency Training – to build confidence and fluency in reading aloud and understanding texts.
-
Better Handwritten – this programme helps students produce written work with the greatest clarity.
These interventions are designed to be responsive and effective, helping every learner make measurable progress in their literacy journey.
At New Mills School, literacy is more than a skill—it is a tool for empowerment, creativity, and connection. We strive to ensure every student leaves us as a capable, thoughtful communicator, ready to thrive in further education and the wider world.
