New Mills School opens to Years 7 and 11 only on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th March

Our situation continues that due to levels of staff absence related to the Coronavirus outbreak we are unable to open the school to all students. We have a significant number of staff with underlying health issues as well as an increasing number of  staff who are in isolation due to themselves or family members developing symptoms. Please keep an eye open for updates, as this is a rapidly-changing situation. If we need to send out further information we will do this by email, via the school's website and facebook.

Year 11 have been prioritised because of this being their GCSE year. We hope that by accommodating our youngest students from year 7 we minimise the need for parents to find childcare.

Years 8, 9 and 10 students must remain at home, unless their parent or carer is an NHS keyworker who will be unable to work because their child is not in school.

For these parents we will  endeavour to run a  mixed-age group to keep these students in school to support the work of the NHS.

If you need to use this service, please email Mrs Jesson as soon as possible from your NHS work email address so she can plan provision and staffing for these students.

As well as teaching Y7 and Y11, teaching staff who are in school will set appropriate work on 'Classcharts' for their students in other year groups to work on at home. Please remember that some staff are ill or isolated with young families and therefore dealing with the demands of unexpected childcare. In due course, we will also email out more detailed guidance for supporting your child in home learning.

As a school we play a role not only in educating students but also in safeguarding. We want to make sure that our safeguarding responsibilities are maintained for all students. If you, or your child, have any immediate safeguarding concerns about a child, where there is an immediate risk of harm, then you must contact Derbyshire Social Care on 01629 533190, or the Police on 101.

Please remind children who remain at home of the Government advice of 'social distancing' and that they should avoid non-essential contact with others whilst they are not attending school. Related to this we are sad to announce the school production of We Will Rock You has been postponed to a later date. We will let you know as soon as we have more concrete information about when this will go ahead.

Finally, we are aware that several families did not get notified of today's closure until very late. The email was sent out in the early evening; we could not do it any sooner as we were waiting for a full picture regarding staffing levels before we could make a decision and plan provision. Any delay after that will either have been the result of technical issue beyond the scope of the school or because we do not have an up-to-date email address for you. If you think this is the case, please can you send the correct details to

We are very grateful for your flexibility and patience as we manage this emerging situation.

Best Wishes,

Ms A Barker & Mrs C Jesson
