Art and Design

At NMS the aim of Art and Design is to inspire creativity and independence, unlock potential and outperform expectations. We do this by teaching technical skills from year 7 onwards so that each child understands how to be successful and what they need to do in order to surpass their art target.

The syllabus is led by the New National Curriculum. Pupils are introduced to art and design through the study of colour, line, shape, tone and detail. Pupils work in their own sketchbooks in the same way as professional artists who collect and record ideas, creating a visual journey that shows progress and individuality and progress.

Pupils will complete exercises exploring a variety of mark-making skills that can be used as a means of recording information and expression.  Pupils will learn how to work in a broad range of materials in order to explore how artists use line and shape, and produce their own compositions in response to traditional and contemporary artists and the world around them.

Our NMS artist in residence Amanda Whewell works closely with every year group upon community based projects both inside and outside of school throughout the year.
