Tutors & Tutorials

Our tutors work tirelessly to create a caring, positive, stimulating and happy environment where every child is known personally and valued as an individual. They help each student develop self-confidence, self-respect and sensitivity towards others through their daily interactions.

A student’s tutor is the teacher that ensures that the student care system works in conjunction with subject departments, and with parents/carers to ensure that every student develops the academic, social and personal skills to become the best they can be.

At New Mills School there is one tutorial time per day, lasting 25 minutes from 8:45 to 9:10am.  This time is used to ensure the students have a clear focus on their learning and is valued by students. Students have structured tasks throughout the week which look at over-arching aspects of learning such as careers, literacy and numeracy. Tutorial time is more than a lesson, it is the time when students have an opportunity to interact with each other and their tutor on a wide range of topics, where the personal development of all students is supported, valued and celebrated.

Part of supporting a student’s development is addressing their academic progress across all their subjects. Tutors at New Mills do this in a variety of ways which include:

  • Acting as first point of contact for academic concerns from students and parents.
  • Acting as mentor for each student, reviewing overall progress after each report, celebrating successes and determining routes for improvement where needed.
  • Liaising with relevant colleagues regarding behaviour, attendance and punctuality and intervening as appropriate, to avoid progress being detrimentally affected.
  • Deliver tutorials in appropriate and engaging ways.
